Signing Time on my iPhone!

I'm always telling people about Signing Time and give them the website address so they can see for themselves. In waiting rooms, we usually bring a portable dvd player and have Signing Time discs to play to help William pass the time. Usually several kids and their parents wander over to watch, and I tell them about the benefits of using ASL and how Signing Time makes it fun and easy to learn. Seeing it for themselves and finding out just how quickly they can learn a few signs in only a few minutes really impresses people. Seeing how excited their children get about watching Signing Time often encourages parents to want to get a volume or two to use at home. Telling people how much Signing Time has meant to our family certainly does impress them, and invites further questions and interest, but seeing for themselves is the most effective way to get them to visit the website.

Since I don't carry the portable dvd player or my laptop with me everywhere, I was thrilled to find out that Signing Time came out with an app for the iPhone!

I love having Signing Time on my iPhone. William has been enjoying it too. This app covers the signs from volumes 1 & 2 of Signing Time, series 1. The images are sharp; the videos are clear. You can choose to view the flash cards. The front shows the image and word for the sign. Tap the card to flip it, and there's a picture of Rachel showing the sign. Need more clarification? In the upper right, you can tap 'watch' to view a video clip of Rachel teaching you the sign.

Searching for a particular sign? On the main menu, tap 'Find a Sign' and all the signs from volumes 1 & 2 are in alphabetical order. Find the sign you want or use the search function, tap the word, and see the photo of Rachel showing the sign, tap for the image; if you need to see the video, tap 'watch' in the upper right corner.

Ready to review? Tap 'Challenge' on the main menu, then decide whether you want to be tested on Volume 1, Volume 2, or both. A photo of Rachel showing a sign comes up, tap to answer and choose from 1 of 4 choices. This is one of William's favorite features.

I really love having the videos on the app. The quality of the videos is fantastic, and the sound excellent. Covered in the music videos are the 'Theme Song', 'Show Me a Sign' & 'The Good'. The ASL videos can be chosen via the alphabetical list or the search function. Once you tap a word, it takes you right to the video of the sign.

So far, this is one of the few apps on my iPhone that I haven't had any glitches with at all. The only downside is that I want more, more, more!

For Cathy

I've got this best friend who, although I love her dearly, feels she can bully me into making a blog post. It's a good thing I love her, or I'd have to tell her where to go. She updated her blog recently and informed me it was my turn. Okay, she's not bullying me, but she is right, it has been awhile. The other day I joked with Robert that I needed to blog that I'm on a blog break, like it's not that obvious, right?

Truth is, I've been busy and limiting my time online. Ever since I got the iPhone, I check facebook, myspace, a few blogs, and twitter. I've also decided to get myself into better shape, and have been committed to working out daily, whether it is using the Wii Fit or learning to run with with Coolrunning's Couch-to-5K running plan. Mariko shared that site with me, and I just finished week 4 of the plan. I have never been a runner, and I'm not planning to run in any marathons, but I really want to get into running shape. I've been feeling more energized since I began. I've also been able to fit some of my favorite jeans, ones that I have missed wearing for months.

The most time consuming project I've undertaken since the start of the new year, though, is a birthday gift for Mariko, who turned 25 last month. She knows it will be very late, but it will be very worth it. Don't ask me what it is; when it's finished, I will post it... with photos. If you know what it is, please no hints in comments since Mariko does read this. This gift is a labor of love, just as she has been all these 25 years.

Speaking of a labor of love~

The other day I downloaded Signing Time valentine cards via my Signing Time newsletter. Yesterday I made some 'ILY' hand cookies for the kids' classroom parties; Sarah had the idea to decorate the fingers like Rachel's~ so I did!

Doug, my 18 yr old, had fun decorating the rest of the cookies

So, for a blog about not blogging, I guess I found something to blog about.
